While driving to work, I heard a story on the radio. Two little girls were playing in the park and as time went on they started to argue. One little girl told the other little girl her hair was ugly and nappy.
When the girl went home she felt sad and started to dislike her hair. This took me back to when I was a child and was teased about the texture of my natural curly hair.
When I was old enough, I put chemicals in my hair to straighten it for over 30 years to fit in until I decided to embrace my naturally hair in 2011.
Then I thought of my own granddaughter Riley who was 9 months at the time. I would hate for anyone to be able to make her feel bad about her hair and tear down her self-esteem, self-love, or self-acceptance of her naturally curly hair. So I vowed to make sure that never happened and empowered her with pride.
Riley loves her natural hair and her favorite hairstyle are Mohawk puffs! She wouldn’t let anything get in the way of doing what she loves. She enjoys playing soccer, dancing and belting out her favorite songs. She dreams of becoming a teacher, a ballerina or a doctor when she grows up. Her aspirations and disposition heartened me to create a clothing brand for girls like her.
About Riley's Way
Riley’s Way is all about your little girls with natural hair, who we refer to as Natural Hair Beauties, doing it their way. The company received its name from my granddaughter because she’s confident enough to be herself and accept, embrace and love her curls. We aim to encourage girls to be anything they want to be in life while embracing their natural hair with inspirational apparel that celebrates it. We want to add an inclusive representation of natural hair beauties in the workforce for black girls. Our journey indeed started because no one was offering an inspirational apparel brand celebrating natural hair in quite this way.
It is our mission to inspire young black girls to embrace their natural hair while being empowered to achieve their life goals.
Riley’s Way aims to contribute to making a world where every young black girl knows she is beautiful no matter the texture or style of her hair.
