As a child, most of us had ideas about what we wanted to be when we grew up. Perhaps you knew from an early age that you wanted to help people, and so someone talked to you about different professions in the public service industry, like doctors, nurses, or police officers. Maybe you had a favorite teacher and found learning to be really, really fun. So you thought about becoming a teacher someday. Or maybe you have always been artistic, and thought a career in music or the arts would be a great career path to follow. You might have found that you were good at cooking or baking, and desired to work in—or even own—a restaurant, someday.
It's important to keep in mind when helping your child pursue a career path they love that they should be allowed to follow their own interests and abilities. Don’t force them in a direction you think they should go. Gentle guidance into finding out where their interests lie can go a long way. Listen to them to find out what they’re excited about. Let them ask lots of questions. Support their natural curiosity. And have them look at what the adults in their life do. All of these things can open up a world of possibilities to them.
As your child gets older, their ideas are likely to change, and it might be a good idea to help them do some research on certain careers. Actively participating in clubs or activities outside of school and even volunteer work can help them develop different skills and lead to new interests as well. Whatever you do, stay open minded to their ideas and encourage them to explore a variety of career options. Be supportive and nurture their ideas as they explore what their interests are. And don’t forget to remind them that girls can do anything they set their mind to!
